I've never really been into the manga scene.....ever. Yet, the other night I decided to look for one to try out.
I was getting ready to leave my local bookstore when I found Pet Shop of Horrors Vol. 1. So I read through the first couple
of pages and find the story quite interesting. The question is "Can the rest of the graphic novel be as good?".
The story is about a man by the name of Count D and his pet shop. Like all pet shops, Count D has: canarys, dogs, cats
and other house pets. But unlike all pet shops, Count D also has exotic animals which have special abilities. However, there's
a catch. You must sign a contract with three rules to follow. If these rules are broken, something terrible will happen. There's
also Detective Orcot who believes that Count D is associated with unexplained freak accidents.
The story is told well with great artwork and excellent dialogue. Pet Shop of Horrors may sound like it's really only
for fans of the horror genre,but in reality contains more tragedy than horror in this graphic novel. Horrors also contains
a pet catalog which shows all of the animals in graphic novel with commentary on them. But the best part about this is that
Pet Shop of Horrors only costs $10!!!!!
The only problem with Pet Shop of Horrors is that if you haven't read manga before you might find it hard to read right
to left. There's an explanation for this, but it still might give some trouble. Count D might seem creepy to some, but if
you don't really care about his appearance then this shouldn't bother you.
Overall, this an excellent graphic novel. It features some great art and convincing dialogue. If you have never read
manga then this may be difficult for you to read. I give it 4.5* out of 5*
