Ever since it's beginning, Ultimate X-Men has been a consistently good title. It manages to blend the characters and
places of the X-Men universe and starts at the very beginning in a modern setting. So when I heard that writer Brian
K. Vaughan (see Runaways) was writing this comic for a while, I was quite happy. So when I read the comic, would it continue
the great storytelling of Ultimate X-Men?
In the last issue, the X-Men lost one of their own, Hank McCoy and are now dealing with his death. Also, the
X-Men attempt to recruit a new member, but is not so eager to join. During all of this, a dark force is growing....
Brandon Peterson's art, in this comic, is BEAUTIFUL! Peterson's pencils, mixed with the pencils in this
comic work very well. And let's not forget how cool it is to see more of the X-Men universe intergrated within the Ultimate
universe.
On the down side, there seems to be a few things in this comic that don't seem right. For instance, why is Bobby Drake
seems okay, in this story, when the first time Hank was near death, he was unable to talk to other people a little after the
event, but why is Bobby now teaching Rogue how to skate on ice, right after Hank's death? However,
Vaughan still made Storm seem like...Storm.
Overall, Vaughan could have done a little a better with this comic. Though Peterson is able to tell the story well, it
still doesn't excuse the fact that Vaughan dropped the ball with the characterization. Hopefully, Vaughan will be able to
turn this story around and make the rest of his run a little better. This comic receives 4* out of 5*
